Many pet owners know that mosquitoes are annoying—but they can also be dangerous. Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading Heartworm disease, a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects both dogs and cats.
Understanding how mosquitoes spread heartworms can help you better protect your pet.

The Heartworm Life Cycle (Simple Breakdown)

Heartworm transmission starts with a mosquito bite and involves several stages:

1. A Mosquito Bites an Infected Animal

When a mosquito bites a dog, coyote, or other animal that already has heartworms, it picks up microscopic baby worms called larvae.

2. The Larvae Develop Inside the Mosquito

Over the next 10–14 days, these larvae develop inside the mosquito into an infectious stage.

3. The Mosquito Bites Another Pet

When that same mosquito bites another dog or cat, it deposits the larvae into the pet’s skin.

4. Larvae Grow Inside the Pet

The larvae travel through the bloodstream and develop into adult heartworms over several months.

5. Adult Heartworms Live in the Heart and Lungs

Adult worms settle in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, where they can grow up to 12 inches long and cause serious damage.

Why Mosquitoes Make Heartworms So Common

Mosquitoes are very effective at spreading heartworms because:
  • They are everywhere
  • They bite multiple animals
  • They can travel easily
  • They are active year-round in warm climates like Florida
This is why heartworm disease is so common in our area.

Indoor Pets Are Still at Risk

Even if your pet lives indoors, mosquitoes can still:
  • Fly into your home
  • Enter through doors, garages, and windows
  • Bite your pet inside
It only takes one bite to transmit heartworms.

Why Prevention Is So Important

Because mosquitoes are impossible to completely avoid, prevention is the best protection.
Heartworm prevention medications:
  • Kill larvae before they become adult worms
  • Are given monthly
  • Are safe and effective
  • Cost much less than treatment
Common options include:
  • Credelio Quattro
  • Simparica Trio
  • Sentinel Spectrum
  • Revolution Plus

The Bottom Line

Mosquitoes play a critical role in spreading heartworm disease. Because they are so common—especially in Florida—pets are at risk year-round.
The good news is that heartworm disease is almost completely preventable with monthly prevention and regular testing.
If your pet is not currently protected, now is the time to start.
