Halloween is all about fun — colorful glow sticks, spooky decorations, and sweet treats — but for our pets, this festive season can be full of hidden hazards. Dogs and cats are naturally curious, and many Halloween items that seem harmless to us can be dangerous or even toxic to them. At the Animal Clinic of Mandarin, we want pet parents to enjoy the holiday safely by knowing what to watch for and how to protect their furry friends.

💡 Glow Sticks: Not as Harmless as They Look

Glow sticks are a staple of Halloween night, but they can be hazardous if chewed or punctured. The liquid inside is typically non-lethal but highly irritating to the mouth, eyes, and skin. Pets that bite into glow sticks often drool excessively, foam at the mouth, or act distressed due to the bitter taste.

What to do:

  • Rinse your pet’s mouth with water and offer a small amount of milk or canned food to neutralize the taste.

  • Contact your vet if irritation or drooling continues.

🔋 Batteries: A Shocking Hazard

Halloween decorations, light-up collars, and toys often use button batteries — and these can be extremely dangerous if swallowed. Ingested batteries can cause chemical burns in the mouth or digestive tract within hours, or even lead to life-threatening internal injuries.

What to do:

  • If you suspect your pet swallowed a battery, contact your veterinarian immediately.

  • Do not induce vomiting without guidance, as it can worsen internal burns.

🍬 Candy Wrappers & Foil: A Hidden Choking Risk

Even if your pet doesn’t get into the candy itself, the wrappers, foil, and sticks can still cause serious problems. These materials can get lodged in the intestines, leading to vomiting, loss of appetite, or life-threatening blockages that require surgery.

What to do:

  • Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and trash bins securely out of reach.

  • If your pet eats wrappers or packaging, monitor for vomiting, drooling, or abdominal pain and call your vet.

🧡 Keep Halloween Fun and Safe

To prevent emergencies this Halloween:

  • Store glow sticks, batteries, and candy well out of reach.

  • Supervise pets around decorations and trick-or-treat items.

  • Keep emergency numbers handy, including Animal Clinic of Mandarin and a local 24-hour emergency vet.

A few extra precautions can make the difference between a fun Halloween night and a stressful trip to the ER.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "I began working for Dr. Kaiser at the Animal Clinic of Mandarin over 3 years ago. I decided
to get a new Lab mix puppy and made the decision to enroll Zuri in Trupanion. I made this
decision after hearing other employees and Dr. Kaiser talking about how great it has been for
their own pets and our clients.
Within the first 6 months my puppy Zuri’s knee kept coming out of place and she would stiffen
up and could only walk on 3 legs. She had to have surgery and between working with Dr. Kaiser
and the specialist I couldn’t have been happier that I was able to take care of Zuri and give her
the treatment that was needed at such a young age. I now have no worries as she grows older
that I won’t be able to take care of her financially. I recently added a new 1 year old rescue Great
Dane, Zane to our family. He also has Trupanion because I can’t imagine the cost if something
happens to him being such a large dog."

  • "Dr. Kaiser and staff are awesome. Great customer service. They deal with the pet insurance company directly for you so you don't have to pay what is covered directly out of pocket. They have gone above and beyond to help our fur baby. Super clean! We love to see Harry (the beautiful St. Bernard) growing up as well!"

  • "I called and was able to get an appt the same day. The office was very clean and customer service was very exceptional. Dr. Kaiser took her time to go explain everything and get a thorough history. Sick call exam and consultation came up to $51.75. She also offered a deal on pet insurance. Overall we had a very good experience."
